Round tables

Party Rental Ltd lists these seat ranges for round tables: a 48 inch round seats 6 to 8, a 60 inch round seats 8 to 10, and a 72 inch round seats 10 to 12. Ranges like these are the upper and lower ends of what rental companies commonly quote. Pick the lower end if you want guests to have elbow room for a plated meal.

  • 48 inch round: 6 to 8 seats.
  • 54 inch round: 7 to 9 seats.
  • 60 inch round: 8 to 10 seats.
  • 66 inch round: 9 to 11 seats.
  • 72 inch round: 10 to 12 seats.

Rectangular and banquet tables

The same company lists a 6 foot rectangular table as seating 6 to 8 and an 8 foot table as seating 8 to 10, across 30, 36 and 42 inch widths. Rectangular tables are easier to line up for a family-style meal and make better use of long narrow rooms, but conversation is harder across the length of the table.

Space per guest

These counts are a starting point. Chairs with arms, large place settings, centerpieces and family-style platters all reduce how many people are comfortable. If a table sits at the top of its range, expect guests to be close together, and leave room for the chairs to pull out.

Aisles and accessibility

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design set the clear width of walking surfaces at 36 inches minimum, and clear floor space for one wheelchair at 30 by 48 inches minimum. Those standards apply to facilities, not your party, but they are a useful benchmark: if a guest using a wheelchair or walker needs to reach their seat, aim for at least that much clear path between tables, and more where staff will be carrying food.

Use the numbers in the chart

Set each table’s seat count in the tool to match the table you are actually renting. Confirm sizes and capacities with your rental company or venue, because chair style and table width change the real number. Ask the venue for a floor plan and compare it with your layout before you commit to the count.
